“Run Ole Jonah” (Click to Hear)

I have played guitar since the Christmas of my fifth grade. That Harmony Jumbo Western stood almost as tall as I did at the time! I cut my teeth on the Beatles, so basically love classic rock, but also absorbed some folksy Simon and Garfunkle, jazzed up George Benson, and a touch of fusion and Caribbean. Thus, my style is rather eclectic. The sound track you are listening to, called “Run Ole Jonah,” was written and recorded years ago and gives you a sense of that rock influence of my earlier years. That old Harmony guitar I found to be better than a driver’s license all through high school, so I was sure to bring her along to college. Early in the fall of that freshman year, a few guys and I were entertaining the evening crowds by playing guitars and singing on the steps of the girls’ dorm. (Where else?) The wind was blowing the pages of the chords and lyrics I was using for songs I did not know that the crowd called out. The cute blond sitting next to me had a pure velvet alto voice that seemed to float down from heaven. When asked, she agreed to hold the chord book for me. The rest is history.

I have owned a number of guitars over the years, but mostly Martin, Alvarez Yahairi, Aria Pro II, and Yamaha. My standard performance guitars these days are a Yamaha APX-9C Electric Acoustic and a vintage Yamaha SA2000 Double Cutaway Semi-hollow Body Electric. During interims at various churches, Jean and I will sing specials and mini-concerts. When not doing interim work, I always am plugged into the musical program of my home church. I join Jean singing in the adult choir and as part of the praise team for Sunday morning worship. I also play lead guitar in the praise band on occasion.

I have written and recorded my own music, mostly Christian, and am a member of ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers). These days I do all my own recording and mixing at home with a hard disk 16-track recorder/mixer. I currently have two albums on iTunes. One is “Turn to Jesus,” a digital remastering of an album Jean and I recorded while in seminary. All the songs are original compositions. The other iTunes album is an instrumental tribute to the music of my father, whose musical career was stymied as a bomber pilot over the Atlantic in WWII. The style is a bygone era, but I still cherish his lyric melodies.
