Laodicea was part of a three-city complex of Laodicea, Hierapolis, and Colossae in the Lycus River valley. Founded by the Syrian king Antiochus II about 250 B.C. and named for his queen, Laodice, the city became a banking, finance, and textile center along a major east-west trade route.
